Salt, Dust, and Starlight \u2013 The Bolivian Altiplano<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are landscapes that demand attention. The Bolivian Altiplano is not one of them. It whispers. For miles. Sometimes for hours. And that is exactly its charm. Travelers who come here aren\u2019t looking for checklist sightseeing. They seek roads that seem to vanish into nothing, villages where time runs on a different rhythm, and nights where the Milky Way shines brighter than any streetlamp \u2013 which is not difficult, since there are hardly any streetlamps at all.
Our photography journey took us across the southwest of Bolivia. Not (only) in pursuit of postcard shots, but in search of the images hidden between the grand landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journey Is the Destination<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Altiplano, distances aren\u2019t measured in kilometers but in hours. And sometimes in dust. Lots of dust. Our jeeps became our second home for several days. The drivers knew every dirt track, every dried riverbed, and every pass you\u2019d never willingly attempt on a European road. While we photographers debated light, focal lengths, and composition, the drivers guided their vehicles with stoic calm through rocky fields and along narrow mountain tracks. At some point, you stop thinking about the next bend and simply start looking out the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s where many of the images in this series were created: on lonely roads, somewhere between sky and earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the Road Suddenly Tells Stories<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The small villages were the real surprise of the journey. Not spectacular, not polished for tourists \u2013 daily life continues undisturbed. A woman in front of her house. A llama pausing in the middle of the road, as if in between appointments. Adobe houses, dusty paths, and a silence that Europe has almost forgotten. \nAs a photographer, you quickly learn patience here. Not every moment wants to be captured. Some scenes only unfold when you stop looking for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Longest Night of the Trip<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The geometric salt patterns stretch to the horizon, as if someone had carefully ruled the landscape. When night fell, the Altiplano revealed an entirely different face. Far from any settlements, the Milky Way arched across the sky like a luminous ribbon. The jeeps that were our transport during the day became tiny anchors in a landscape that suddenly felt infinite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only the temperatures reminded us that romance has its limits. While the cameras patiently gathered their long exposures, we photographers experimented to find how many layers of clothing one can wear and still press a shutter. The answer: surprisingly many.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
